About Franklin: Passacaglia and Rondo for violin and piano
Franklin: Passacaglia and Rondo for violin and piano is an ambitious and expressive chamber work by Steven Franklin. Commissioned by violinist Ania Filochowska, it combines two forms based on repetition: the passacaglia and the rondo. Together, these structures create a dramatic journey that moves between oppression, collapse, renewal, and fiery energy.
Structure and character
The Passacaglia begins with a repeated theme that grows in intensity. With each variation the music becomes heavier and more oppressive, pressing forward with inexorable force. Eventually the weight of repetition reaches a fever pitch. At that point, the structure collapses and a fragile, hopeful simplicity emerges in its place.
The Rondo introduces a driving “A” theme that recurs insistently throughout the movement. However, between its appearances the music wanders into contrasting textures and moods. These shifts give the movement variety and unpredictability, while the return of the theme creates cohesion and momentum. As a result, the work as a whole captures both inevitability and freedom within a compelling modern framework.
Performance and interpretation
The violin part demands lyrical phrasing, dramatic intensity, and technical control. Meanwhile, the piano provides both support and dialogue, expanding the texture beyond simple accompaniment. The interplay between instruments highlights Franklin’s skill in writing chamber music that feels both personal and expansive.
