About Gergely Lukacs: Fifty Shades of Tuba
Gergely Lukacs: Fifty Shades of Tuba is the debut CD of young Hungarian tuba virtuoso Gergely Lukács, released in 2019. The album shows how versatile the tuba can be. With seven tracks and 48 minutes of music, it blends Baroque, Classical, and Romantic works. As a result, it highlights both virtuosity and lyrical beauty.
Repertoire and highlights
The program begins with Telemann’s Canonic Sonata TWV 40:118 No. 1 in B-flat Major, arranged for tuba and performed with Roland Szentpáli. In addition, the CD features Sonata No. 2 in F Major for Horn and Strings (arr. for tuba) with the Óbuda Danube String Quartet.
Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat Major K.191/186e is a centerpiece. Arranged for tuba, it is performed with the Óbuda Danubia Orchestra under Máté Hámori. The three movements—Allegro, Andante ma adagio, and Rondo—demonstrate both technical brilliance and expressive phrasing.
The album also includes Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise Op. 34 No. 14 with piano (Ágnes Szelcsányi). Finally, the Concerto for Tuba with the Győr Symphonic Band, conducted by Ferenc Szabó, provides a triumphant conclusion.
Collaborations and production
Several renowned Hungarian musicians contributed to this album. Roland Szentpáli joins on tuba, Ágnes Szelcsányi on piano, and Villő Oláh on cello. Moreover, members of the Óbuda Danube String Quartet enrich the chamber works. Orchestral forces include the Óbuda Danubia Zenekar and the Győr Symphonic Band. Consequently, the album captures both intimacy and grandeur.
Recording, editing, and mixing were handled by Szabolcs Kapui, ensuring clarity and balance. The cover design was created by Bianka Vörös, while photography was by Balázs Szecsődi.
