About Szeged Trombone Ensemble: Wind Tunnels
Szeged Trombone Ensemble: Wind Tunnels is an adventurous album that pushes the boundaries of trombone performance. Featuring original works, jazz, film music, and bold transcriptions, the CD offers a journey through diverse musical worlds with energy and virtuosity.
Repertoire and style
The album opens with Dave Deason’s Wind Tunnels for Trombone Quartet, a three-movement work (Intrada, Cantabile, Roustabout) full of character. It continues with Bach’s “Actus Tragicus” BWV 106 – Sonatina, arranged by Roland Szentpáli, bringing Baroque solemnity to the ensemble’s sound.
Tamás Diószegi’s Axel’s Symphony merges Bartók, Faltermeyer, Deep Purple, Presgurvic, Reel2Real, and Mussorgsky into a unique collage of classical, rock, and pop. Wagner’s Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral, arranged by Áron Simon, adds Romantic grandeur.
Other highlights include Bolivar Meets Granados & Marcello (Diószegi), All of You by Csaba Kovács, and Hans Zimmer’s Jack Sparrow Theme from Pirates of the Caribbean, arranged by Csaba Wágner and featuring him on contrabass trombone. The album closes with Trombumba (Lotzenhiser/D’Rivera) and Simon’s arrangement of Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson, ensuring a vibrant finale.
Performance and character
The Szeged Trombone Ensemble combines elegance with bold experimentation. Their flexible style allows them to move seamlessly from sacred music to film soundtracks and pop hits. Consequently, Wind Tunnels becomes more than a collection of pieces: it is a showcase of what a trombone ensemble can achieve.
