About Franklin: Trumpet Sextet No. 2
Franklin: Trumpet Sextet No. 2 is a bold and imaginative work for trumpet ensemble. Steven Franklin composed the piece to highlight both individuality and collective sound. Each player has space to express their own musical language, yet together they form a powerful unity.
Instrumentation and musical character
The sextet features five trumpets in B-flat and one bass trumpet in C. The first trumpet may use piccolo trumpet in the ending for extra brilliance. However, the part also works very well on C trumpet. The ensemble must balance melodic and accompanimental lines with care. Every part carries harmonic weight, yet one main voice often leads. That voice needs to project naturally without force, which creates clarity and depth. As a result, the texture remains transparent while the ensemble keeps its energy.
Performance and recognition
Franklin designed this work with both artistry and competition in mind. In 2016, the Getzen Trumpet Small Ensemble, formed by Curtis Institute students, won first place at the National Trumpet Competition performing this piece. Their performance demonstrated how Sextet No. 2 combines lyrical writing with rhythmic drive. Moreover, the contest success confirmed its value as a modern gem of the trumpet repertoire.
