Igor Martinez

Igor Martínez (1994) started his musical studies in the world-acclaimed social and orchestral program “el Sistema” founded by Jose Antonio Abreu. At the Propatria School of “el Sistema” he had his first musical experience at the children choir of Propatria and a couple of weeks later the tuba chooses him at the age of 11. As a soloist he gave the Venezuelan premiere of the Frank Bencriscutto’s Tuba Concertino (2011), and the South American premiere for the tuba concerto: “BANDSTERIX & TUBELIX” for Tuba and Wind Band by the Spanish composer Ferrer Ferran under his baton (2012), becoming this version the first one ever recorded and published on CD, he also performed the R.V. Williams Concerto for Bass Tuba with the Canadian / Venezuelan conductor David Cubek (2018) and premiered his Concerto for Brass Trio and Symphony Orchestra with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and the Bolivar Brass Trio with Gonzalo Hidalgo as conductor (2018). For 6 years was the principal and solo tuba of the Simon Bolivar Youth Symphony Band where he participated on different tours around Venezuela, Colombia and Europe, also recorded as principal tuba on the debut album of the SBYSB “Mambos y Fanfarrias” (2012) under the baton of Thomas Clamor. Later on 2014 he won the audition for the Principal Tuba position at the Municipal Symphony Orchestra of Caracas conducted by Rodolfo Saglimbeni, and in 2015 he won the audition for the world-acclaimed Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and start touring around the world under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel. He studied tuba and composition at the Simon Bolivar Music Conservatory and had master classes with Esteban Villegas (Costa Rica – Tuba), Juan Jose Munera (Spain – Euphonium), Steven Mead (UK – Euphonium), Fabien Wallerand (France – Tuba), Bastian Baumet (France – Euphonium), Roland Szentpali (Hungary – Tuba), Blas Atheortua (Colombia – Composition), Johan de Meij (Netherlands – Composition), Ferrer Ferran (Spain – Composition) Gerardo Gerulewick, Luis Laya, Norman Gomez and David Pedroza (Venezuela – Composition). He started his arranging work with the Symphony Rock Orchestra of the Conservatory at 2012, and then expanded to the Symphony Band and the Youth Orchestra of the Conservatory until started to work as freelancer, at the present he divides his time between playing at the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, teaching at the Simon Bolivar Music Conservatory, arranging and composing with special passion for brass chamber music.
