About Franklin: Petite Suite for wind quintet
Franklin: Petite Suite for wind quintet is a vibrant chamber work in three movements. Each section presents a unique mood and character, moving from playful humor to deep reflection and finally to a wild, theatrical finale. Steven Franklin designed the suite to highlight the expressive range of the wind quintet, while engaging both players and listeners with vivid contrasts.
The movements and their character
The opening Humoresque is lighthearted and childlike. Its playful energy grows more serious for a moment, yet it soon retreats back into laughter and charm. The music reminds the listener not to take itself too seriously, keeping its whimsical tone until the very end.
The second movement, Elegy, introduces a darker atmosphere. Feelings of loss, numbness, and solitude dominate, interrupted by sudden cries of anger and despair. However, these intense outbursts soon dissolve into quiet resignation. The closing clarinet note leaves an open question, suggesting uncertainty rather than resolution.
The finale, Le Cirque, bursts in with a hysterical, circus-like energy. This wild abandon shocks after the weight of the Elegy, throwing the audience into chaos and exuberance. As a result, the three movements together form a stark journey through contrasting emotional worlds.
Performance and interpretation
Performers must bring out the playful wit, the raw grief, and the manic joy of each movement. The suite demands flexibility of style and a keen sense of ensemble balance. Therefore, it makes an excellent showcase for wind quintets in recital or competition settings.
